I'm sorry I fell off the wagon on this one guys, it's a popular feature and well worth the time given I do much of the reading anyways. The past two weeks have just been hectic and I didn't do nearly as much reading as I normally do.
In any case, I'm back on track and let's go over what was the top things written this week!
Monday, Feb. 8th
- ManaNation - 20 20 20 Vision by Sam Feeley - A good article that discusses the merits of a Red Deck Wins in Extended post-Worldwake
- XMTG - Unifying Theory #3 - This is the third part in the story arc for XMTG about a guy who is looking for Magic's unifying theory.
- Wizards - It's Not Like That by Kelly Digges - An excellent article by Kelly discussing his relationship with Magic design, his desire to do it and his experience with doing it for Worldwake.
- SCG - Updating Elves for Oakland by Gavin Verhey - An excellent discussion on Elfball / Elf combo in Extended and how to update it.
- ChannelFireball - Should I Be Playing Tectonic Edge by Matt Sperling - Aside from the terrible image of a table of data, this is a great article exploring the math and theory behind playing or not playing Tectonic Edge.
- GatheringMagic - Rise of the Eldrazi Predictions - Right or wrong, it is a good read of predictions and guesses at what we'll see in Eldrazi.
Tuesday, Feb. 9th
- ManaNation - EDH-Wake Continued by Dale Lovelace - Dale discusses the non creature cards in Worldwake that look most likely to make a splash in EDH.
- Wizards - Rough Landing by Steve Sadin - Steve reviews and shares his thoughts on the lands, Zendikons and man-lands in Worldwake.
- QuietSpeculation - Wake Up and Smell the World by Kelly Reid - A good breakdown of rares and mythics in Worldwake and their potential for gains in trading and speculating on the set.
Wednesday, Feb. 10th
- ManaNation - One Sided Wrath? by Dan Eckstein - Dan looks into Kor Firewalker and Red's potential new board clear spell.
- ManaNation - Examining Worldwake and the Science of Deduction by Russell Tassicker - Our Aussie writer takes a break and publishes a letter by John Watson (MD) sharing a discussion he had with Sherlock Holmes.
- T:apped - Silenc:d - Shifting the publishing to Wednesdays this issue of Tapped was our most visited ever.
- ChannelFireball - Building a Standard Gauntlet by Chris Lachmann - I can't stress enough the importance of having a gauntlet for playtesting.
Thursday, Feb. 11th
- ManaNation - The EV of Worldwake by Kelly Reid - Normally I let the ManaNation writers have free reign on subject of their articles. This week I requested Kelly do this piece and he didn't disappoint. An excellent discussion on the expected value of Worldwake.
- ManaNation - Why People Hate Blue by Derek Dimpfl - A wonderful article by a guest writer that discusses why people just don't seem to like blue unless they're the one playing it.
- Judgecast - Ep. 2 - Leveling Up - I hunted Riki Hayashi for a while and when I approached him about writing (or he approached me, I can't recall) he had the idea for a podcast for judges. It's still getting going but this was a great episode about motivations for judging and more.
- XMTG - A Lover's Spat - Another fun XMTG strip exploring the tie-ins of love with Magic.
- ChannelFireball - The Oakland Zoo by Brad Nelson - A good Zoo build and an explanation and plan that seems rock solid to me.
- PureMTGO - Momir Basic Primer by Daniel Overbeek - Being a format I knew nothing about I appreciated and enjoyed this primer for the Momir Basic format.
Friday, Feb. 12th
- ManaNation - Urza's Beginnings - Part of our Roon's Tales series, I was lucky to find a guy named Brendan to take over writing the series. He does a great job and I love his flow with it.
- Wizards - Looking at Limited Pointing by Erik Lauer - When Erik writes, I listen. He's one of the members of R&D I have the most respect for and in this article he explains the metrics he uses when building for limited. An excellent peek behind the curtain.
- SCG - Insider Trading - The Cost of Cards: The Rise of Magic’s Popularity (Part 1 of 3) by Ben Bleiweiss - Stepping out from behind the pay wall, Ben starts a series discussing the rise in cost for Magic cards.
And there it is, this week's review of the Magic metaverse. I'll be updating my blog reading list in the next week or so, we've had a few blogs moved to Death Row and we've had at least one new one added.
What was the best Magic article you guys read this week?
