Hello all! Ever since the first set debuted Fireball, Disintegrate, and sorta Drain Life, X burn spells have been a key part of the game! They are used to kill critters, players and today planeswalkers with aplomb! We even have an X spell matters archetype in the format like Rosheen Meanderer and others. I have built a real life X Matters deck around our good Giant. So... what are my favorite X spell burn stuff today for Commander? From mana sink, removal to damage doublers, they are great so...find out today!
Honorable Mention #1. (#9. Overall) - Red Sun's Zenith
Hello happy folks! This red rare is first! You can shoot any target for X damage and then you exile it if a creature was destroyed like Disintegrate. Then you shuffle this into your deck for later casting. The idea here is to get a free shuffle for decks that care, like Sensei's Divining Top, Sylvan Library, Brainstorm or Scroll Rack and then actively push the table your way, or I like this as a reliable set of triggers in Spellslinger! Love it loads!
Honorable Mention #2. (#8. Overall) - Hell to Pay
This printed last year rare one Red to start is next!! You can only shoot dorks, not even planeswalkers or players, but your excess damage turn into tapped Treasures. It's great to tap out with your mana rocks and Nykthos too to make a ton of extra mana for the next turn. But there's a better tap-out mana sink next spot... the fact this only hits dorks drops it here. Add planeswalkers and players? Top 5 easily.
Honorable Mention #3. (#7. Overall) - Fanning the Flames
This double red X spell with buyback three is next! You can shoot any target for X and if the buyback is paid, you don't shuffle it like the one above, you'll just put it right on into that hand of yours!!! This is the best recursive X burn spell and downright amazing in Spellslinger to kill stuff and players while triggers like Young Pyromancer or burn or X Spells Matters and yet...you aren't playing it! It's in just 3,340 decks over at EDHRC.com...why? Did you forget this existed... be honest... you did...
Honorable Mention #4. (#6. Overall) - Banefire
This rare X spell with one Red to start will shoot any target for damage, and if you spent at least 5 in the X it's uncounterable, love that, and unpreventable too. Love that too. It cannot be answered! What keeps it back here is that it's just a fancy Blaze... just a 1:1 trade, unlike the next 5, but it's a fancy one, and you can tap out for this safe that it will resolve... barring weird stack interaction like Ending the Turn with Time Stop and such.
#5. Rolling Thunder
All damage it deals is split up to all targets! You can shoot that Consecrated Sphinx for six that Soul Warden and Esper Sentinel for one each, that Acidic Slime for two and then you spent 10 in the X and then 12 total to kill four dorks! It's super mega flexible and in the same block as Fanning the Flames too! Since you can split up the damage, it's great with things like Torbran. It used to be as underplayed and blowout-y as Fanning the Flames but recent reprints put it to people's mind but yet today it's in just 4,625 decks... the next card is better but needs those colors but that's it...
#4. Aurelia's Fury
This Boros colored instant speed X thang will also divide like Rolling Thunder above and at instant speed too! Then you'll tap dorks smashed and players cannot cast non-creatures this turn so it's got more value than shoot and kill for tapping them for an Alpha Strike or just shutting down interaction on your turn. It's definitely fun! But that 2nd color identity holds it back from more Commander brews today. But it's the one card better than Rolling Thunder above if they are in your brew!
#3. Crackle with Power
Ah yes... every math fan's favorite X spell! This double and triple X is next! And then five times X damage to each of up to X targets. So, as an example, if you put one into the X for three total X mana you'd deal 5 damage to one target. If you put two into X for 6 total mana your deal 10 to two targets, it scales up fast in damage, but mana too, many infinite mana decks use this as a finisher to kill them all! Two left!
#2. Jaya's Immolating Inferno
This legendary sorcery is next! It shoots three targets for X damage and needs a legendary dork or walker of the planes to be cast, and it's also a great finisher since you can shoot each foe for 8000 damage too with infinite mana or just enough to finish them all late. It's three for one early, mid or late game is strong! On turn three you can take out a Birds of Paradise or Llanowar Elves, Esper Sentinel and a Viscera Seer all for one each. The only thing keeping it back is that requirement to control the right permanent, but in Commander you should always have that out, and that's enough!
#1. Comet Storm
This instant speed X spell deals X damage to as many targets as you spend with multikicker! Base one without it. it's a Commander Classic and essential, you love it, I love it, we together love it, yay!!!
